A Chinese New Year Story
Music: Avril Lavigne - I'm with you
CHINESE NEW YEAR EVE
Went to have dinner at Dad's friend's new restaurant, then promptly rushed home to pray to the God of Heaven (Tian Gong) at the struck of midnight. See how traditional my folks are ... ok superstitious. But anyhow its a tradition and we've been doing it for ever. Also, on the 12th (or was it 16th) day, we also have to do it all over again, this time with two sugar cane stalks ..it's a Hokkien thing apparently *shrugs* ... chewing bits of sugar cane can be fun though
DAY ONE
Got my first angpow from dad and mom ... called relatives in Singapore and wished them Happy New Year ...bla bla bla. Then visited relatives ... gosh there are sooo many of them ... and hmm traffic can be so bad. 4 out of 10 hours were probably spent on the road ..listening to the drone of my dad's lecture about everything under the sun ..sigh
Luckily, the heaps of ang pows made up for it ..after deducting my air ticket ..I still made a nice profit. Afterwards, went out with some cousins to have dinner and play pool ..
DAY TWO
Went visiting even MORE relatives .... oh it's my grandma's birthday as well. At night, went with my parents to the tres chic BLOWFISH. The blowfish and the dragon fusion rolls were pretty good and so was the finale of green tea brulee and tempura red bean icecream. The best thing about the place is the vibe though but the patrons were oh so snobbish .. I felt like I was eating in a club with all the attitudes displayed ..
Parents left at about 11 and I went to the bar upstair to meet my cousins, who had a table reserved. Met even more friends there ..apparently the place is very popular with students studying overseas hmm ... Nice decor with the huge red lantern in the centre to complement the festive holiday. Very nice loungey music too.
Went to check out THE GATE at abt 2am. Weird club with an underground/dungeon vibe. Nice lasers though ..music was a mix of tribal funk that night, dunno who was spinning, think some overseas guy. Feeling too tired so left at 3am. Think I'm getting old ...
